8 facts about Working Overtime in Korea

Working in South Korea is fun and as well as extremely strenuous.
Koreans are really hardworking and want to achieve their goals in their life and work, as they say Paali Paali which means quickly quickly.

If you have an experience in one of the companies, the working style is stressful, like any other Asian countries but Koreans especially are famous for being workaholics.
Normally working hours are morning 8:00am to evening 18:00pm. But Overtime means working beyond the official working hours that is called OT. This OT is generally considered as paid working hours.

  • The concept of working in Korean companies is to stay in the office until the boss stays. Hence such people bound to  work overtime to impress their bosses.
  • Sometimes employees have deadlines approaching hence they have to do overtime to finish their work in time or before time.
  • Some people are single or forced bachelor in that city, so no one waiting for them at home, they prefer sitting late in office.
  • Some people want to earn money hence they do overtime
  • Some people have to submit work until the next day hence they do overtime.
  • Sometime people need to study and research some new Technologies hence they do OT to master the techniques or softwares etc.
  • Finally some people enjoy staying at office with friends, use the office facilities and hence they do overtime

  • Mostly the stress of work and stress from boss is heavy which makes the employee to do overtime

Some companies also measure their employees performance by the amount of time they stay in the office rather than the quantity or quality of work.
At times quantity of working hours are rated higher than the quality of work submitted .
This might be stressful for the employee.
If you are working in a small company the issues might be more severe as compared to a well established company.
These facts are not for all the companies in Korea but general thinking of Asians.
Even the newspaper article in Korean Herald showed that the employees are wasting almost 50-60% of their daily working time by checking emails. I feel that is due to the long stretched working hours which are extremely monotonous.
Although I have seen many changes coming up  due to the Korean managers who have studied abroad or worked in international companies or have open mind.
Such bosses create a flexible and performance oriented working environment.

The 3D's of shipbuilding jobs, South Korea

This blog potrays the Three D's for the workers and engineers who are associated with the Marine life and job. The shipbuilding companies in South Korea are considered the topmost in the world. The ranking goes from HHI, Uslan as number one, then DSME, Geoje and SHI, Geoje. The job has lot of benefits and are among topmost jobs of the world with the package, bonus, facilities etc. But on the other side the job is straneous, with lot of hard-work, honesty, rough and tough attitude to survive in such a hazardous areas. The quality and quantity of ships which are constructed in South Korea are among top and number one. The owners of the ship are always satisfied with the ship construction by the Korean shipbuilders, as Korean companies manage the time well and deliver the ship before the deadline of the project completion with good quality. This takes a lot of hardwork of the employees construct such giant structures.

Hence the marine workers and engineers consider the Marine jobs has shocking 3Ds. So what are these 3Ds= 1. DIRTY, 2. DEADLY, 3. DANGEROUS

  • Dirty The shipping yards of Korean shipbuilders are well maintained but not comfortable to work in. Some places are extremely small and some places are wide enough, high, steep and deep. While in the concept of constructing the giant structure they require welding, painting which needs to work on heights or hanging around the ship. The conditions are not well -suited to the human at times. The construction site is generally dirty with heavy machinery.
  • >
  • DANGEROUS The working place, especially the shipyards are not safe and also have erratic time schedules. The worker needs to have extreme strength and excellent skills to handle the machines, otherwise it may lead to machinery hazards or major problems, with leakage of life threating fluids etc.

  • DEADLY The marine jobs can be life threating with chances of falling while working. There have been several accidents like fire & explosions etc. Some material which is being used in the manufacturing of the ship are not suitable to human-body. There are several high pressure areas and high voltage areas which extremely deadly can lead to the death.
Hence the working knowledge in these shipyards are extremely important.
The shipbuilders always care well for their workers and hence they developed a special HSE, health safety engineering department which constantly keep a check in the yard and provide special training sessions to the workers and engineers who are involved in the construction of such giants.
Many efforts are constantly being made by the shipbuilders to avoid any kind of accidents and they keep the health and safety of their workers and engineers on the top priority list and develop a free cordial environment to work.

These days the waste food bug is really a nuisance. The bugs or insects are very tiny and can fly around. Generally black in color, they keep flying over the food and also they can bite human while they are asleep at night.
This the real mating season for such bugs and they keep growing their population in the house.

  1. The food bugs generally are found flying around the waste food. You must throw away the waste food almost everyday and clean the place where you keep the trash bin regularly.
  2. I would suggest clean your kitchen or food storage areas with some detergents dry them well and store the food.
